Under the Shad Moon, Chwame Gischuch • Lenape New Year

The Bergen County Historical Society celebrates Under the Shad Moon, Chwame Gischuch, the Lenape New Year, from 1 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, March 19, 2016, at Historic New Bridge Landing, 1201 Main Street, River Edge 07661. At 1:30 p.m. in the Steuben House, Chief Dwaine Perry of the Ramapough Lunaape Nation will make welcoming remarks and Floyd Little Sun Hicks will sing songs of welcome and thanksgiving. At 2:30 p.m., historian Kevin Wright, author of 1609: A Country That Was Never Lost, speak on Tantaqua, Last Sachem of the Hackensacks. He was listed as a native owner of lands surrounding the tidal estuary of the Hackensack River, from Newark Bay northward to New Bridge, in 1668. Tantaqua sold what is now Teaneck, north of Cedar Lane, in 1677 and then resided where the Steuben House was built in 1752 on what was originally known as Tantaqua’s Plain. Bob Wills, of the Sunrise Trading Post, will show and sell reproduction trade items representative of the Contact Period.
A special exhibit of Native artifacts from the collections of the Bergen County Historical Society, including pottery, stone and bone tools, found throughout Bergen County over the past several centuries, will be displayed. $10 adult, $7 children, BCHS members free.

All 3 Jersey-Dutch Houses are connected by a gravel walking path. Free parking is available or take a train on the Pascack Valley Line from Secaucus via NJ Transit to the New Bridge Landing Train stop.
